Paying off his supporters

May 16, 2026: Today I learned that the president is willing to drop his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over the leak by a private contractor (not an actual IRS employee, but who was convicted and sentenced to prison) of some of his tax records, if the Justice Department will set up a $1.776 (so it's patriotic!) billion "Donald J. Trump Truth and Justice Commission" to "compensate" people who claim they've been victims of government harassment. I'm sure every one of the 1,600 or so Jan. 6 rioters he pardoned will be filing for some of that taxpayer money, along with a few lawmakers like Lindsey Graham. And he says he doesn't need congressional approval to appropriate the funds. It's early, but I doubt our present "representative" will be pushing back against it in any way against this. (Follow-up: The next day, the Justice Department created the fund.) (Further follow-up: Our current representative supports it, saying he "hopes" it will be handled fairly.)

Imposing his morality, risking our forests

May 17, 2026: The Spokesman-Review just ran an article ("New USDA conditions are hampering state and local wildfire services") about how the Trump administration is reneging on already-signed contracts with Inland Northwest fire departments as part of its crackdown on what it calls “radical left ideology.” According to the S-R, "The conditions from USDA require states to pledge they will comply with the Trump administration’s policies on diversity, immigration, the treatment of transgender Americans and more." What do those things have to do with fighting fires, and why is it the USDA's job to enforce them through contracts with firefighters?

Protecting himself and his family

May 20, 2026: Sigh. I had hoped to make this page about issues that arise over the campaign season, but it's only been four days and we're already on our third serious crisis. This time it's the "deal" our country's attorney general, acting in a temporary (i.e., not yet approved by Congress) made to forever bar the United States from pursuing ANY tax-related cases against our president, ever.

And let's not forget that the lawsuit that he used to make this deal was filed because a contractor's leaked documents revealed that the president had not paid taxes for 10 of the previous 15 years. He said during his debate with Hillary Clinton that it makes him "smart." I say it makes him a freeloader.

And again, our current representative is largely silent on this.
